Hunger Game 1

Hunger games A Media Matters @ WFHS Post

Hunger games A Media Matters @ WFHS Post

I started to read  The Hunger Games. I know I am so late, anyway I think this is a really awesome book . The Hunger Game, it is a very terrible and dangerous game. Katinss is main character, and she is very brave and kind. she lives in District 12 with her family. This place extremely hard to find food in there, so here people very poor, and also Katniss mom’s mental state is not good, because when her husband died, she got lots of shock. So Katniss takes care of her family. She had learned hunting too. One day her sister was selected to participate in the Hunger Games, but she didn’t want to her sister to suffer the terrible situation. So she took her sister’s place. The game is punishment for the uprising, each of the twelve districts must provide one girl and one boy, called tributes, to participate. The twenty-four tributes had competition to the death, just the last tribute standing wins. Katinss suffers difficult situations but even so, she wins the game with her partner.

If you read that book  you can find this book background is colonist. It is not just battle royal. It is not just a game. Someone makes a terrible rule and people have to do what they say. We can suffer similar situations too. It will be not same game and same rule like this game. But we have a surviving every day. Our hunger game is our life. If you read that book you can grow more yourself. I am sure.

Why Eminem Is Great

Why Eminem is the best rapper/poet/lyricist of all time

Rap is a constantly developing life form. Rap stands for Rhythm and Poetry. The poetry part, the rhymes, was perfected by Grandmaster Flash in the early 80s. Rhythm was perfected by Biggie Smalls in the 90s. Then Eminem came around in the late 90s. The kid from Missouri, made by Detroit, reinvented rap and took over the rap world.

Why Eminem is Great A Media Matters @West Forsyth

Why Eminem is Great A Media Matters @West Forsyth

Eminem writes poems that are meant to be spoken. His delivery adds new meaning to every verse. He uses language as a tool to incite emotions in a way that nobody has ever matched. Eminem was named by Rolling Stone as the 82nd greatest artist of all time. He was also named the King of Hip Hop. Elvis Presley was the King of Rock, Michael Jackson was the King of Pop, Solomon Burke and James Brown were the kings of Soul, and Eminem is the king of hip hop. He earned this title by reinventing rhyme schemes, mastering rhythm and pacing, and pioneering word play on a Shakespearean level.

Eminem can rhyme better than anyone in the history of writing. For most of history, poetry was standardized, they were either ballads, loose ballads, English sonnets, Italian sonnets, limericks, or haikus. William Shakespeare wrote 150 sonnets with identical rhyme schemes. Poetry in the present day has taken completely new forms—free verse and flow verse. Free verse poetry is non-rhyming natural speech. Flow verse consists of extremely loose rhymes, also known as slant rhymes, near rhymes, or forced rhymes. Also, flow verse has heavy internal rhyming and the rhythm is created by how words sound when spoken. This is most often seen in rap music, where Eminem is king.

In an English sonnet, á la Shakespeare, the rhyme scheme is A B A B C D C D E F E F G G: simply three quatrains (four line stanza) with alternating rhymes and no internal rhyme, followed by a couplet. This rhyme scheme is true for every English sonnet ever written. Eminem uses similar rhyme schemes, and then takes them to the next level by adding incredible internal rhymes. For example, in “Sing for the Moment,” Eminem says

“These ideas are, nightmares to white parents
Whose worst fear is a child with dyed hair and who likes earrings
Like whatever they say has no bearing
It’s so scary in a house that allows, no swearing
You see him walking around with his headphones blaring
Alone in his own zone, cold and he don’t care
He’s a problem child, and what bothers him all comes out
When he talks about, his f*cking dad walking out
Cause he just hates him so bad that he, blocks him out
If he ever saw him again he’d probably knock him out
His thoughts are wacked, he’s mad so he’s talking back
Talking black, brainwashed from rock and rap
He sags his pants, doo rags and a stocking cap
His step-father hit him so he, socked him back
And broke his nose, his house is a broken home
There’s no control, he just let’s his emotions go”

This verse is a modified sonnet. Instead of three quatrains and a couplet, Eminem uses a sextain, two quatrains, and a couplet, all with equally crazy rhyme schemes. Eminem is really just showing off here. He starts with a six-lined stanza that has one of the most complex rhyme schemes I’ve ever seen:

ABABC

AABABC

BEBC

BCDDEBC

CDEBC

EEEEEB

Like a traditional stanza, nearly every line ends with a BC rhyme, pretty standard stuff. However, all the other letters in that rhyme scheme are internal rhymes. In 73 syllables, there are 33 syllables that contribute to the rhyme scheme. That ratio is practically unheard of in poetry. Also, in those 33 syllables, only 5 different rhyme types are introduced. That sound consistency is incredible. Eminem used a hard “o” sound in lines 3, 4, and 5. In the final line, he uses five hard “o” sounds in a row. Beautiful. He brings this back in the final couplet by using EIGHT STRAIGHT hard “o” sounds.

The speed at which Eminem can rap has also helped make him famous. In the popular verse from “Rap God,” Eminem says

Why Eminem is Great A Media Matters @West Forsyth

Why Eminem is Great A Media Matters @West Forsyth

“Uh, sama lamaa duma lamaa you assuming I’m a human
What I gotta do to get it through to you I’m superhuman
Innovative and I’m made of rubber
So that anything you saying ricocheting off of me and it’ll glue to you

I’m never stating, more than never demonstrating
How to give a mother****ing audience a feeling like it’s levitating
Never fading, and I know that the haters are forever waiting
For the day that they can say I fell off, they’d be celebrating
Cause I know the way to get ’em motivated
I make elevating music…”

Here, Eminem delivers a whopping 150 syllables, 97 words, in a “supersonic” 14.6 seconds. This comes out to just over 10 syllables, or 6.6 words, PER SECOND. For comparison, average human conversation ranges from 75-125 words per minute, an average auctioneer speaks at 250 words per minute. Eminem is speaking at 400 words per minute in this stretch. Then, in the very next line, he drops the pace to a mere 130 words per minute. Lyrical rollercoaster.

My favorite part of Eminem’s style is his word play. He uses words’ sounds, spellings, and meanings to create puns that go over most people’s heads in the middle of a verse. Some of his best ones are listed below:

“I gave Bruce Wayne a Valium and said ‘settle you’re a** down I’m ready for combat, man. Get it? Calm Batman?” –Won’t Back Down

“Now you get to watch her leave out the window, guess that’s why they call it window pane.” –Love the Way You Lie

“Standing on my Monopoly board, I’m on top of my game.” –No Love

“I must be allergic to failure because every time I come close to it, I just sneeze, but I just go achoo and still achieve.” –Survival

“Girl, I ain’t got no money to borrow, but I’m trying to find a way to get you alone.” –Berserk

Legen…..wait for it….dary.

The Problem With Controversiality

It greatly irritates me that even now, even in 2015, being different from everyone else is frowned upon, being controversial is frowned upon. Why is anything even frowned upon anymore?

I’m not afraid to openly admit that I’m a feminist, that my religious views are often unbeknownst even to me, that most of my thoughts are so controversial that I rarely share them with the world around me. It saddens me that I have a mind full of new perspectives to offer the world and yet, I am constantly living in fear of what people will think. The world is so paradoxical, they tell us growing up to be who we are, to not care what people think about us but “they” are the same ones who tell us what we are thinking of is wrong, they are the very ones who judge us. And there lies the issue.

This is not 1801. Love is love. Two men share the same feelings as a man and a woman. Not everyone practices Christianity and so, not everyone should be forced to follow what the Bible, or any Holy book preaches. I am me and you are you. And so, I will make decisions for me and you shall make decisions for you. Feminism. A word with a negative connotation. Why negative? Because back in 1801, men didn’t want women to have rights. But feminism is not about hating men or women owning more power, it is about equal rights for every human and equal treatment. Do not tell me to make you a sandwich, I am not a servant, I am an equal. And don’t tell me I can’t be president because I can be.

The problem with these types of controversial thoughts is that people are stubborn about their views. It’s okay to have your own views but it’s equally important to remember that we share this world with billions of others.

What Happens Next?

I’m not going to lie, I’m terrified of the future. I may be the only one to openly admit it, but I know for a fact I’m not alone. The unknown is a scary place, who knows what it will hold? But I will tell you a few things I have learned along the way, and I hope my advice can help.

One of the most important things to remember is that things will always get better. You may hit some rough patches along the way, but you will survive and life will go on. Think about all the difficult things you have faced in the past. At the time, it may have felt like the end of the world. But look at yourself now. You made it. And hopefully your days are brighter than before.

It is also important to remember to try not to worry too much. Some things my seem like an issue you are responsible for solving. Relax. Not everything is under your control. Sometimes you’re just going to have to accept how things are and see how everything works out. I promise you, things will work out as they are meant to. Even if the results aren’t desirable at the time, you have to remember it is all part of the plan.

As long as you are being the best “you” possible, then you have nothing to worry about. Stay in school. Stay focused. Set goals for yourself and do everything you can to achieve them. If you work hard now, it will pay off later. Trust me. Just do the best you can and things will work out in your favor! I believe in you!

9 Interesting Facts Surrounding Lincoln’s Assassination

Lincoln's Assassination Mediamatters@WFHS

Lincoln’s Assassination Mediamatters@WFHS

So I am in the midst of reading Killing Lincoln by Bill O’Reilly and Martin Dugard, and I’m finding out a lot of interesting facts I never knew about his assassination, or the events surrounding it in general. And so I made a list…

1) John Wilkes Booth (Lincoln’s assassin) was engaged to a woman named Lucy Hale. (If that name sounds familiar, you probably have seen the show Pretty Little Liars).

2) Lucy Hale was known to have many other suitors despite her engagement, some of which include John Hay, one of Lincoln’s personal secretaries, and Robert Todd Lincoln, Lincoln’s 21-year-old son who is also a union officer.

3) At first, Booth and his co-conspirators were planning just to kidnap the president. It was Booth who turned it into a plot to murder him.

4) Booth attended Lincoln’s second inaugural address and tried to lunge at him. Because he was a well-known actor, however, the officer who grabbed him back accepted Booth’s excuse that he just stumbled.  (Arresting someone like him could have caused policemen problems).

5) Booth had performed at Ford’s Theatre before, where he would later shoot Lincoln.

6) This one isn’t related to his assassination, but I found it very shocking. There was extremely easy access to the White House during Lincoln’s presidency– there was no fence or gate blocking people from coming in. Citizens were allowed to roam the first floor. People could be inside the building all day and even peer in on the president while he worked. Petitioners that wanted to talk to Lincoln even sometimes slept on the floors in the hallways.

7) Supposedly, Lincoln had a dream about his own death three days before his assassination. Although hesitant to do so because he didn’t want to worry anyone, he shared this dream with his wife and friends.

8) The play Lincoln was seeing the night of his assassination was a popular play called Our American Cousin. The other play that was staged that night was Aladdin, or the Wonderful Lamp.

9) The man chosen to guard the one route that led to the state box (where Lincoln was sitting while he watched the play) left to go drinking and had a history of being rude and showing up for work late on a consistent basis. In other words, he was the worst possible choice for a guard.

The Resilience of the Human Soul

Iris is not like your average sixteen-year-old girl. She has a natural heart of gold, being a vegetarian and an animal lover. When her father dies, she is sent to live with family she has never met before. Turns out her Aunt Sue and cousin Book aren’t exactly her “type”. They clash with Iris, making her home-life undesirable. Poor Iris rebels, and sets two of her aunt’s goats free before they are sent to the slaughter-house. Because of this, Iris is physically punished. Even after Aunt Sue and Book are sent to jail and Iris is sent to a foster home, Iris makes sure to do everything in her power to take care of the beloved goats back at home.

‘What Comes After’ by Steve Watkins very deep and emotional story. What makes is even more upsetting is the fact that the author got the idea for this book from an actual newspaper article. The story begins in a place of grief and gets even darker from there. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes an emotional read.

Innocence Expires

IMG_6001XVI by Julia Karr is a dystopian story that is centered around a world where women are sexualized beginning at age 16.

The main character of the book, Nina, is 15 but turning 16 soon. In her world, when a girl turn sixteen she is labelled as sex-teen and is ready for any man to use for his pleasure. Transcendental Survival

intothewild

Into The Wild by Jon Krakauer tells the story of Chris McCandless. Chris is inspired by the transcendental lifestyle and wants to live off the land. The book follows his trip around the country and gives an insight on the lives he affected along the way. Eventually Chris follows his dream to live off the land in Alaska. He manages to survive a very long time living only by his knowledge and a few guides. He fully achieves his desires and realizes the truths he never knew before.

The book isn’t in chronological order and reveals Chris’ fate on the first page, but the author slowly reveals more details on his adventure and the adventures of others who had the same desire as Chris. Many people think his actions were crazy, but I almost fully support what he did. Today’s world is so focused on materialism and what someone has when in reality we should be living with only what is necessary. That is exactly what Chris did he eliminated what was not needed and was able to see the world with a completely different point of view. This true story really captivates the reader and lets them have a new perspective as well. I definitely would recommend this book to others.

Hunger Games

I was late on the bandwagon reading the Hunger games series, but I am sure glad I did! The Hunger Games is an awesome read and makes you want to read the next book immediately to find out what has happens. Katniss is a strong character who solves her own problems and takes charge of her own life. Which makes her very much a role model and relatable.  Her struggles with her divided affections between Peeta & Gale are portrayed but not overpowering. (Personally, I would pick Gale) Her great ability to create problems can make you question if she is right or wrong and whether she stays true to who she is. Reading The Hunger Games makes you think about our own world and how reality shows, threats of war and obsession with fashion trends influence us daily. We are so influenced and affected by government and what’s trending. We forget the basic meaning of life and what to do to survive. What really matters! If you haven’t read it, well I’m not going to tell you to read it but it’s defiantly a five-star in my book! 🙂

I’ve Got No Clue What To Write About

Writers block sucks. Wither you are an author trying to write the world’s next best-selling novel or just a student trying to write a paper by Monday; when you don’t know what to write, everything is hard. You get tired of staring at a blank screen so you get on tumblr/facebook/twitter/youtube/netflix and say that you’ll do it later, then it’s two days passed the deadline and you’ve got nothing done. The only worse than having writers block would be being a procrastinator with writer’s block.

So how do you fight this horrible awful thing? I have absolutely no idea. But luckily Google is smarter than me. And Google says to do what I am doing right now, which is just write. Write about anything. Just stop caring and write about all of your thoughts. Eventually something that you can work with will pop out and BOOM writers block cured.

But sadly all of that is easier said than done. What if you just have absolutely no desire to write?  If that is the case, believe me, I know how you feel. You’ve just got to push through it. “But miss what if I don’t what to push though it. I just want to watch my show and relax because everything is really hard right now,” You ask. “Well,” I say,”I know that everything is really hard right now, but it’ll feel a little bit easier if you get this done.” I know that is a not the answer that you want to hear at all, but it’s the truth.

In conclusion: You can do this!! I believe in you!!

Opinions Run Wild in Into the Wild

He went from being an intelligent student with a wealthy family and potential place in law school (heavily supported by $25,000 in savings) to a hitchhiker living a nomadic and bold lifestyle, attempting to live his ultimate dream of isolation from society, completely cut off from his family and strong relationships in general. His name is Chris McCandless, and he was a real man who hitchhiked to the frigid wilderness of Alaska in 1992 and survived a total of 120 something days in total isolation. The facts surrounding his eerie death as well as his journals and interactions with various people inspired the nation to become invested in his story– including John Krakauer, who writes about it in the book Into the Wild. As you read on, you might find that the story of Chris McCandless is a redundant and familiar one– the book offers up other events where explorers had a similar dream in mind and went to dangerous, unusual extremes to achieve that. Delving into the actions taken by McCandless and other idealistic individuals determined to live successfully isolated away from society, the reader is able to form their own conclusions about what extremes some people can go to. Are their experiences tragic, or did they get what they deserved? Are they brave and bold, or just plain stupid?

Anyone who gives their all of their savings to charity, burns the rest of the money in their pocket, and isolate themselves from their families for years obviously has a reason for doing so. From the books he kept in the bus where he lived for 120 days on the Stampede Trail in Alaska to the ideas he expressed in his journals to the conversations people recalled having with him, it was obvious that Chris sought more from life than what he felt society offered. He took inspiration from Thoreau and other Transcendentalist writers that advocated for living life to the rawest  and barest terms– relying on nature and self-sufficiency to live a fulfilling life. He was idealistic and determined to assimilate these ideas into his lifestyle. There are also underlying reasons for wanting to be so independent that deal with Chris’s relationship with his father. Chris’s parents had divorced when he was young and his father remarried, but also kept seeing his former wife. When Chris found this out later in life, he was crushed and obviously very affected. Nonetheless his family still cared for him and he rejected any form of help or support they tried to get him. Before the Stampede Trail, he had lived a nomadic kind of lifestyle for two years, working various jobs in different lo cations and never staying put. He hadn’t contacted them once in that entire time, and ironically, those he’d hitchhiked with or worked several months with would receive several postcards from him while his family remained in the dark about his location. Before Chris had left, they thought he was about to begin a new chapter of his life in law school. In two year’s time, they’ll be hearing about his dead body in an abandoned bus in the wilderness of Alaska. My anger towards the fact that Chris didn’t take his family’s emotions into consideration inhibits

Into the Wild mediamatters@WFHS

Into the Wild mediamatters@WFHS

me from thinking that Chris didn’t get what he deserved. It wasn’t tragic. It was sad and unfortunate, but it was the result of ignorance to logic (for example, he didn’t bring any maps of Alaska with him and this helped contribute to his death), and ignorance to other people’s feelings. Although I find the ideas that Chris holds so adamantly appealing are things worth thinking about, the extent to which Chris expresses them gets annoying after a while– especially since there are examples of other adventurers Krakauer gives that follow the same pattern as him. Chris was young and intelligent and seemed to be wiser than many others of his age, but that didn’t conceal the fact that I found him many times over-dramatic, arrogant, and pretentious. Which brings me to the question that I still can’t answer for myself. Were his actions, or the actions of these bold explorers in general, as heroic and honorable as we make them out to be? For Chris, I’m split. I hate the fact that he cut himself off from his parents and relationships in general, and I hate the pretentious air that rose off of him through Krakauer’s depiction of him. At the same time, I respect his wholehearted dedication and initiation to live out the life he wanted.

Aside from what I feel about McCandless and what he did, I do have a more definite view on the book as a whole. Although Krakauer was a very informative and unbiased narrator, I feel that he spat out so many details that each chapter was a struggle to get through. Overall, I found a good portion of it dry and slow and long. I still think it’s worthwhile to read, however, because I liked that it made me think differently. If you can appreciate the overall theme, I would give it a shot. Bear in mind though, that you might find yourself frustrated with McCandless and ready for the story to pick up.
